Management Structure

The integrated structure of INSPIRATION includes representatives from all partners and functions in the project. It will effectively manage resources between partners and activities within the programme of work to:

  • (i) ensure scientific and training objectives are met;
  • (ii) ensure fairness and equality between the host organisations;
  • (iii) monitor progress and ensure flexibility in the programme so that training needs are fulfilled;
  • (iv) consolidate effort across the programme to ensure the network achieves full potential.

Steve Thornton is the Network Coordinator and Chair of the Network Management Committee. His main duties are to ensure effective communication of information between all parties regarding training, decisions, feedback, achievement of good practice, and to oversee the risk management programme, outputs, resolve any contractual or consortium issues within the partnership or the European Commission and be the ultimate decision maker for differences within the project.

The Scientific Coordinator of INSPIRATION is Kay Knöller, who oversees the scientific achievements of the network. He monitors scientific progress and outputs, considering the objectives of each work package, and ensures this remains aligned with the overall goal of the programme. Kay liaises closely with work package leaders and Supervisory Teams in the review of research progress made by the Early-Stage Research fellows.

Ingeborg Joris is the Training Coordinator overseeing the training provision and quality across the network. She ensures consistency in the training delivered by the project and that this remains aligned with the overall goal of the programme. This includes monitoring and integration of training provided by both the Beneficiaries and Partner Organisations for the Early-Stage Research fellows. Ingeborg liaises closely with work package leaders, Supervisory Teams and the research fellows in the review of training progress made.

The Knowledge Transfer Coordinator, Owen Fenton, oversees the outreach activities and research dissemination strategy for the network. He ensures the effective communication of project outputs via the network website, publications in different media and network training events, and monitor research outputs and public outreach activities for the network. He liaises closely with the Network Project Manager and CL:AIRE, the network knowledge transfer partner, to develop and manage effective knowledge transfer mechanisms which promote the network activities, work and achievements of the research fellows. This includes coordination with other science-based knowledge transfer networks and industry forums involved in sustainable remediation research and training, for the long-term development of the INSPIRATION network.

The Network Management Committee (NMC) is chaired by the Network Coordinator. The voting body of the NMC consists of the Network, Scientific, Training and Knowledge Transfer Coordinators. Meetings of the NMC are attended by representatives from all Supervisory Teams, the Network Project Manager, two Early-Stage Research fellows, and advisors from finance teams and careers services. The principal role of this Committee is to implement the project effectively and to monitor overall progress against the stated work plan, milestones and deliverables of the network. The NMC is responsible for the coordination and successful delivery of the research and training provision within work packages and across the network. The Network Management Committee meets every 6 months during the lifetime of the project.

The Project Advisory Board is chaired by the Network Coordinator and includes representatives of the Supervisory Teams, Partner Organisations and two independent scientists. The Board is composed of both industrial/commercial and academic organisations which represent stakeholder and end-user interests in the project as well as scientific expertise. Their role is to provide project steering, periodic review of progress and independent advice on the progress of individual research projects, training needs and quality for the Early-Stage Research fellows. The Project Advisory Board is assembled once every year during the existence of the network.

Each Early-Stage Researcher benefits from a Supervisory Team which consists of two academic supervisors. These are a (i) primary supervisor who leads the work package hosting the fellow and (ii) secondary supervisor from a complementary work package in the same or different organisation. Fellows also receive an industry supervisor when undertaking training at a Partner Organisation within the network. The Supervisory Team is responsible for daily management of training, mentoring, research supervision and support during all formal, complementary and experiential training received by the research fellows.

The European Commission (EC) is represented by the Project Officer, who are independent reviewers of the whole network, monitoring progress according to the network's grant agreement with the EC, receiving and evaluating outputs from the project, and providing critical feedback.

The Financial Management of INSPIRATION is lead by The University of Sheffield financial and research support services. This support includes advice and help in financial and contractual matters, guidelines on financial participation, business planning, preparing financial statements, record keeping, distribution of payments received from the European Commission and provision of good practice guidelines.

The Network Project Manager supports all management (Work Package 7), outreach (Work Package 6) and financial functions, linking together the different representative bodies of the entire INSPIRATION network and ensuring project delivery alongside the Network Coordinator.
